The Importance of Steering and Suspension: Ensuring a Smooth and Safe Ride

Steering Wheel Shaking When You Brake? Start With An Inspection

You don’t need a lesson in brake parts to know the steering wheel didn’t used to do that. A little tremble as you slow down, a stronger shake coming off the highway, maybe a pulse through your foot as well. Something has changed. What you need now is an explanation, not a shopping list of parts.

We can help with that at Maclane’s Automotive in Malvern, PA. Brake repair may be the answer, but we need to inspect the brakes and the front end before deciding. Calling everything a warped rotor gets ahead of the work.

About That Warped Rotor Diagnosis

People use the phrase for several different conditions. A rotor may have thickness variation or uneven deposits from the pads, so the braking force isn’t consistent through each turn. There may also be runout, meaning side-to-side movement as the rotor rotates. You feel the result, not the measurement. We need to measure the parts to find out which condition is there and whether they’re within the vehicle’s limits. Ordering rotors first can miss the reason the trouble developed.

There Is More Than One Pad To Look At

The pad you can see through the wheel might have plenty left. The one behind the rotor might not. That difference sends us looking at the caliper and its slides, because a pad that doesn’t release can drag and generate heat. Say something if you’ve noticed a smell after driving or the car wanting to go to one side. Please don’t touch the brake assembly or wheel to check the temperature. There are safer ways for us to investigate than a burnt hand.

Does It Shake Before You Touch The Brake?

That’s a useful detail. A vibration that starts while cruising may involve a tire or wheel balance issue, with braking making it more obvious. Something loose in the steering or suspension can also show itself as weight moves forward during a stop. We’ll want to check the joints, bushings, wheel bearings, and mounting areas as appropriate. An alignment can’t take the play out of a worn part. New brake pads can’t do that either.

Do Not Test It With A Hard Stop

Just describe what you’ve already noticed. There’s no need to go back out and try to make the shake worse for our benefit. If it’s mild, book an inspection promptly rather than waiting to see how long it lasts. We can’t tell you over the phone that it’s safe to drive. With severe shaking, weaker braking, difficulty controlling the car, grinding, smoke, or a burning smell, get stopped safely and arrange a tow. A soft pedal or brake warning light deserves urgent attention, too. Getting the car here under its own power is not the priority.

What The Repair Might Involve

Sometimes the findings point to pads and rotors on the affected axle. Sometimes we also have a caliper problem to deal with, or movement in the front end. Any resurfacing depends on the rotor’s condition and the manufacturer’s minimum-thickness limits; it isn’t automatically an alternative to replacement. We can explain the findings once we’ve checked them. That’s much more useful than promising a quick pad swap before a wheel has even come off.

Tell Us What Changed

Only on the first few stops? Worse after traffic? Through the seat as well as the steering wheel? Whatever you’ve noticed is worth mentioning, even if you aren’t sure it’s related. Call Maclane’s Automotive in Malvern, PA, at (484) 321-8137 to arrange a brake inspection. We’ll help you work out what needs attention so the next repair is based on the car, not a guess about the shake.
