Clean The Glass Before Blaming The Blades
Start with a clean windshield and gently wipe the rubber edges with a damp cloth. Then test the wipers on wet glass. A coating of grime can make otherwise usable blades smear or skip. Dark residue on the cloth alone doesn’t prove the rubber has failed.
If the same streak stays after cleaning, look more closely at that section of the blade. A small split can leave a surprisingly distracting line across the windshield. Repeated squealing on wet glass is another reason to investigate, especially when the noise comes with poor clearing. Turning the radio up won’t improve the view.
Look For Torn Rubber And Missed Patches
Rubber that’s cracked, hanging loose, or missing pieces needs attention. A blade with damaged rubber can’t keep a clean edge against the glass, and exposed hardware can cause damage. Don’t wait for the loose strip to pull off completely.
A patch the wiper never touches may involve more than worn rubber. Poor blade fit, a damaged frame, or an arm that isn’t applying proper pressure can leave water behind. Chattering Is A Clue, Not A Diagnosis

Smearing can be just as frustrating without making a sound. A thin film may look harmless in daylight and become a glaring haze after sunset. Cleaning is a reasonable first step, but persistent poor visibility deserves a proper look. Don’t keep driving into heavy rain hoping the next sweep will clear it.
Use The Right Blade, Not Just A Similar Length
The two front blades may be different sizes. The rear wiper, if your vehicle has one, may use a different attachment altogether. Check the fit for your exact vehicle rather than buying a pair that looks close.
Some vehicles also need the wipers moved into a service position before the arms can be lifted. Follow the owner’s manual so an arm doesn’t catch the hood. If you’re replacing blades yourself, protect the windshield from a bare arm snapping back against it and make sure each connector locks securely. Test the finished installation while parked, on wet glass.
Give The Next Set An Easier Job
Clear snow and ice before using the wipers, and release frozen blades rather than asking the motor to tear them loose. Use washer fluid suited to the conditions. Running blades over a dry, dusty windshield is a poor substitute for washing the glass.
Age is worth tracking, but performance is the deciding factor. A set that still looks fairly new may already be streaking; another may be clearing well. Check them periodically instead of waiting for a calendar reminder or a storm to tell you.
