What The Different Brake Fluid Types Mean (DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5, DOT 5.1)

Brake fluid isn’t one-size-fits-all. You’ll usually see a DOT rating listed on the reservoir cap or in the owner’s manual. The DOT number mainly relates to performance standards like boiling point and chemical composition.

DOT 3

DOT 3 is common in many passenger vehicles and light trucks. It’s glycol-based and absorbs moisture over time. It generally has a lower boiling point than DOT 4, so it may not be ideal for heavy-duty use, towing, or high-heat braking.

DOT 4

DOT 4 is also glycol-based, but it typically has a higher boiling point than DOT 3. Many newer vehicles and vehicles with higher braking demands use DOT 4. It still absorbs moisture, so it still needs periodic service.

DOT 5

DOT 5 is silicone-based and does not absorb water the same way DOT 3/4 does. It’s less common for everyday street vehicles and is generally not recommended for most ABS-equipped systems. Mixing DOT 5 with glycol-based fluid is a no-go.

DOT 5.1

Despite the name, DOT 5.1 is usually glycol-based (not silicone) and is designed for higher performance with a higher boiling point. Like DOT 3 and DOT 4, it absorbs moisture.

Brake Fluid Flush Vs. Brake Bleed: What’s The Difference?

People often use these terms interchangeably, but they’re not the same job.

The process of bleeding aims to restore both the brake pedal and the hydraulic system’s operational pressure to standard values.

Brake Fuid Flush

A brake fluid flush service provides complete system maintenance through its process. The system receives new fluid, which displaces all existing old fluid in the system, while the process removes contaminated fluid from all system components, including lines, calipers, and the master cylinder. A proper flush is one of the best ways to reduce moisture buildup and protect internal components.

If your braking feels fine, you still may be overdue for a flush. Brake fluid maintenance is a time and mileage item more than a “wait until it fails” item.

How Often Should Brake Fluid Be Changed?

The schedule depends on specific vehicle requirements, which include brake fluid specifications, operational conditions, and other elements. Some cars demand brake fluid servicing every two years, while others may require replacement in larger intervals. Truck users who need to tow and drive on mountains and work in various activities should spend money on preventive maintenance.
