transmission fluid

Is It Time To Change The Transmission Fluid?

You remember the last oil change. The transmission fluid is harder to pin down. Maybe somebody serviced it before you bought the car, but there’s nothing in the paperwork. What now?

Start by finding out what the car calls for, not by ordering the biggest fluid service on the menu. At Maclane’s Automotive in Malvern, PA, we can look up the requirements and talk through what you know about the car. Tell us about any shifting trouble while you’re at it. That can change where we start.

Which Schedule Applies?

A mileage recommendation from a friend’s car isn’t much help here. Different transmissions have different requirements. Even the way you use the car matters; towing, for instance, may put you on a more frequent service schedule. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your vehicle and use.

Bring along the receipts you’ve got. If they don’t mention transmission service, we still shouldn’t assume it was never done. We’ll have to work with the history that’s available, the mileage, and what the inspection shows.

A Fluid Change Or A Shifting Complaint?

There’s a difference between keeping up with maintenance and trying to fix a car that hesitates going into reverse. With the second one, describe the hesitation before asking for a flush. Does it happen cold? After a long drive? Those details are more useful than guessing which part has failed.

A low fluid level can affect shifting. So can electrical problems and wear inside the transmission. Shuddering has more than one possible source as well. A change of fluid might be appropriate, but it isn’t a repair for worn-out parts.

Mention a burning smell or a new puddle, too. And don’t keep driving a car that’s slipping badly or losing drive. Get stopped safely and arrange help. Treat a transmission overheating warning as a reason to stop safely and seek assistance, not something to watch for the rest of the trip.

Where Did The Dipstick Go?

Many cars simply don’t have one for the transmission. That doesn’t settle whether the fluid needs changing; the service information does. It also means checking the level may involve a temperature requirement and a procedure you can’t do with a quick glance under the hood.

Don’t add fluid on a hunch. Overfilling causes problems, and the correct fluid isn’t just whatever bottle says ‘transmission’ on it. A CVT, conventional automatic, dual-clutch unit, or manual gearbox may need a very different product. Match the actual specification.

If the level is low, there’s another job to do: find out why. Topping up won’t mend a leak. Nor will it remove the contamination in old fluid.

What Does The Service Actually Include?

Ask that before comparing prices. A drain-and-fill leaves some old fluid in the unit; that’s part of how the procedure works. A removable pan may be cleaned, and a serviceable filter or strainer may be replaced. On other designs, routine filter replacement isn’t part of the job.

Then there’s the word ‘flush.’ Shops don’t always use it to mean exactly the same thing. An exchange can replace more fluid, but more isn’t automatically better for every car. Ask about the proposed method and whether it follows the manufacturer’s guidance. Existing faults or concerning debris need consideration before deciding what to do.

Fluid type, quantity, access, filters, and seals all affect the estimate. So does the time needed for the correct level check. Have the year, make, model, and engine handy when you call, and ask how long the car needs to stay.

After The Appointment

Don’t brush off a new leak or harsh engagement as something that just needs to settle in. Let the shop know. The point of servicing the fluid is proper maintenance, not a promise that every shifting complaint will disappear.
