Start With The Sounds
A squeal can be the wear tab doing its job. Grinding is worse. That usually means the pad material is about gone.
If the steering wheel shakes, the car pulls, the pedal feels soft, or stopping takes longer, do not ignore it.
Brakes are not one of those wait-and-see things.
Look Through The Wheel
Park somewhere flat and grab a flashlight. On many vehicles, you can peek through the wheel and see the pad against the rotor.
You want to see pad material, not just the metal backing. If it looks thin enough to make you squint, plan on service soon.
Rear brakes can hide better than front brakes. Annoying, but true.
Check Both Sides If The Wheel Is Off
If you safely remove the wheel, look at the inner and outer pads. They should not be wildly different.
One thin pad and one thick pad can mean slide pins, hardware, or caliper trouble.
Also, look at the rotor. Deep grooves, heat spots, or a sharp outer lip mean the brakes have been working hard.
Driving Habits Change Wear
Stop-and-go traffic, towing, hills, work trucks, and city driving all eat pads faster.
So if your neighbor gets more miles from a brake job, good for them. Their driving may not be yours.
Check sooner if the vehicle works harder. Future-you likes that.
